We’ve put OPPO Reno12 5G’s AI LinkBoost to the test and here are the results

One thing that most consumers nowadays tend to neglect when choosing a smartphone is the very reason why we use a phone in the first place, and that is signal strength.

More often than not, we prioritize things like design, construction, display, performance, battery life, software, and other features which to be fair, are also quite important. However, those things won’t matter much if you can’t even use your phone when it matters the most.

Imagine going inside a car park, then you forgot something and you need to call someone, but you don’t have any signal at all, that would be a nightmare. Or perhaps, you’re inside a mall and you need to look up something on the internet quickly and you find yourself waiting for the page to load, that’s quite frustrating, right? Or maybe you’re talking to someone and you need to ride the elevator, but you’re afraid you’ll lose the connection. These things seem to be normal and we tend to just accept it while in fact, you can do something about it. And that is to choose a smartphone that is capable enough to avoid all these hassles. And these are the things that OPPO is trying to fix with their AI LinkBoost technology on the OPPO Reno12 Series 5G. We’ve put it to the test and surprisingly, it’s not just a gimmick. It actually works and it’s absolutely impressive.

AI LinkBoost is a combination of hardware and software features working hand in hand to provide a reliable connection wherever you are, in any situation you’re currently in.

The OPPO Reno12 5G features a 360º Surround Antenna which consists of 9 individual antennas to boost signal reception and optimize network selection using AI. It can automatically recognize the user’s network condition and perform network switching to make sure optimal performance is achieved.

The AI LinkBoost includes the following but is not limited to:

  • More stable connection on fast-moving vehicles
  • Faster and stable connection in crowded environments
  • Faster signal recovery when entering and exiting known weak signal environments like elevators and basements
  • Significant reduction in network lag when using two data-hungry apps simultaneously
  • Faster switching between mobile data and WiFi
  • And a lot more

Now, one of the challenges that I don’t usually pay attention to because I’m so used to it is signal strength inside a mall, so we head out and test how effective the OPPO Reno12 5G’s AI LinkBoost feature is.

Inside the mall, in an enclosed area, the OPPO Reno12 5G was significantly faster, both in terms of download and upload speed against another 5G smartphone. The speed is more than enough for streaming online content while waiting for something and even decent enough to upload photos and videos to social media in real-time.

Now, while the upload speed is lower than its comparison inside an elevator, the download speed is significantly faster with the OPPO Reno12 5G which, to be honest, is more important in this situation. Let’s say you’re watching something on your phone and you have to ride the elevator, you don’t need to worry about buffering or even losing connection at all.

Inside the ground floor car park of the mall, the OPPO Reno12 5G is still significantly better both in terms of download and upload speed and surprisingly, SM San Mateo has a pretty good signal strength at their car park which is definitely appreciated.

We also observed that the OPPO Reno12 5G’s signal strength is consistent, reliable, and fast to switch. We didn’t notice any loss of connection at all when moving to different locations of the mall. And switching between 4G and 5G connection is pretty seamless as well.

Lastly, I also noticed that switching between our local home WiFi and Mobile Data once we step out of range when going out is also quite fast which I haven’t really paid attention to before, but now I realize that’s actually quite impressive.

Overall, the AI LinkBoost technology is not just a gimmick but a feature that actually works as advertised. In fact, the OPPO Reno12 Series 5G became the first smartphone series to receive the High Network Performance certification from TÜV Rheinland, and that says a lot. So next time you choose a smartphone, choose wisely other than aesthetics and all the typical stuff.

The OPPO Reno12 5G is available for only around Php 24,999 in Astro Silver, Sunset Pink, and Matte Brown. You can also check out the OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G priced at Php 34,99 in Nebula Silver and Space Brown.
