ASUS Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE Sets 10 World Records and Wins 23 First Places

An international team of overclockers sets global performance benchmarks with Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids processors using an ASUS W790 workstation motherboard

MANILA, Philippines, March 20, 2022 — ASUS today announced that an international group of elite overclockers has set 10 world records and achieved 23 first-place finishes in a variety of performance benchmarks with ASUS Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE workstation motherboards powered by CPUs including the Intel® Xeon® Sapphire Rapids W9-3495X processor featuring up to 56 cores, plus G-Skill and V-Color DDR5 memory modules and several key components from Enermax. The group of overclockers included Der8auer, OGS team, Safedisk, Shamino and SkatterBencher, plus Elmor and Hagagu from ElmorLabs.

A groundbreaking workstation motherboard

The Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE offers a new approach to workstation overclocking. In the past, professionals have been wary of the trade-offs between performance and stability. However, the Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE provides enough room to push the system’s limits safely and effectively. With its advanced BIOS settings and robust design, professionals can unleash the full potential of their workstation platform. The Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE is a top-of-the-line option that delivers exceptional performance and reliability.

This ASUS Pro W790 workstation motherboard is a highly capable model offering many features that are incredibly helpful for overclocking, such as a Retry button and Safe Boot button. It is equipped to handle almost 2000 watts of power and can overclock an Intel® Xeon® W9-3495X processor to approximately 5.4 GHz, enabling extraordinary scores in Cinebench. The Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE provides all necessary features to take things further, giving users the freedom to explore new territories of performance.

Expert overclockers are impressed

During an overclocking event in March at ASUS global headquarters in Taipei, the biggest challenge Der8auer faced was the memory modules. Eight slots means twice as many module pins to deal with, compared to a desktop motherboard, and condensation problems can arise when using liquid nitrogen to achieve maximum performance. This makes the memory controller difficult to handle at low temperatures. Therefore, finding the right temperature balance between the core clock and memory clock is a challenge when conducting extreme overclocking.

“The board is equipped well enough to handle almost 2000 watts, overclocking the 3495X to roughly 5.4 GHz in Cinebench,” said Der8auer. “The platform itself is extreme in every regard ― max CPU, max power consumption, max performance. It’s also highly equipped, so you can utilize it for envelope-pushing performance.”

SkatterBencher shared his surprise at the impressive overclocking capabilities of an ASUS Pro series workstation motherboard on the W790 platform. Despite not being known for its overclocking potential, this model proved to be a smooth and efficient tool for tuning the CPU. SkatterBencher focused on water-cooling, starting with stock settings and enabling MCE and XMP before manually overclocking. He also took advantage of the water-cooling profile in the BIOS, which provided a 40% boost in performance. He described his experience with the water-cooler as “super smooth,” and he expressed confidence in the motherboard’s ability to achieve the desired settings. OGS Team

Overall, SkatterBencher was impressed with the overclocking capabilities of the workstation board, adding “It’s very impressive for a workstation board to be that smooth for overclocking.” With the watercooling profile enabled, he was able to quickly and easily tune the CPU for optimal performance.

Below is a chart detailing the specific world records and first-place finishes achieved by these talented overclockers using the ASUS Pro WS W790E-SAGE SE workstation motherboard.
